Chapter 16

After Splash had been appropriately cooed over and fed some choice bits of steak, Mirra changed into a flowing pink dress and braided her hair back from her temples. Finally, she called Silas.

“I have Splash,” Mirra said, cutting off Silas’s hello.

“What! Oh my god, is he okay?”

“He’s just fine. We’ve spoiled him with a bit of steak and he’s enjoying basking in our adoration.”

“I’m on my way.”

Mirra held out the phone and looked at it, and then put it down. Walking into the garden, she dropped onto a lounge chair and patted the cushion so Splash would join her. Irma and Jolie had wisely disappeared, so all she could do now was wait. Rubbing the pearl on her necklace between her fingers, Mirra worried over the impending conversation she would have to have with Silas.

It wasn’t long before she heard a truck door slam outside. Knowing Irma would let Silas in, Mirra waited where she was. With that unknown connection dogs have with their owners, Splash had perked up and was standing at the end of the lounge chair. When Silas rounded the corner into the garden, he took off like a shot and beelined to his owner.

“Splash!” Silas dropped to his knees in the sand and wrapped his arms around the wiggling dog, who bathed his face in licks. Laughing, Silas pulled back and ran his hands over the dog’s coat, looking for any sign of injury.

“I couldn’t find any marks on him. He seems fine.”

“Mirra.” Still kneeling in the sand, Silas looked up at her, and the look in his eyes almost took her breath away. She’d given him back a piece of himself, and she didn’t want that gratitude to go away when he heard her story. Gnawing at her lip, Mirra crossed her arms across her stomach.

“I know. I was just as happy to see he was safe,” Mirra murmured.

Standing, Silas walked to the lounge chair next to hers and Splash followed, jumping up on the cushion and crawling into Silas’s lap when he sat. “Is it okay that he’s on the cushions?”

“Of course. I think he needs to be close to you right now.” And so do I, Mirra added silently. Every time she was near Silas it was like her heart did a little dance inside her chest. Never having thought she could be envious of a dog, Mirra now looked begrudgingly at Splash reclining across Silas’s lap.

“How did you get him back? Where did you find him?” An actual smile creased Silas’s face, and Mirra’s stomach turned. She wasn’t ready to ruin this feeling yet.

“Well,” Mirra demurred, “I went to Prince – as you do when you need to get the word out on this island. He said he likes you.”

“Did he? I like Prince. I play dominoes with him from time to time.”

“He’ll fleece you, too. Don’t bet money.” Mirra laughed.

“I learned that after two games.” Silas cracked another smile and Mirra let out a little sigh. Two smiles in the space of a few minutes was unheard of for Silas.
