Chapter Eight

Chely

The next morning, I wake up with a smile on my lips. I can still smell Noah on me, still feel him between my legs. There are small bruises on my hips and thighs, evidence of the passion between us. Last night was unexpected but also…amazing. I opened up to Noah, and instead of shutting down or pulling away, he ran full speed toward me. I think I’m finally ready to let him in, like he says, and see what he might be able to offer the restaurant—and me. It feels like everything is finally coming together.

The smell of frying bacon drifts upstairs to my room, so I dress quickly in my usual jeans and Tacontento t-shirt, throwing my hair up in a messy bun and foregoing any makeup, as usual. After brushing my teeth, I plod downstairs only to draw up short in the kitchen doorway.

Instead of cooking, Abuelita is lounging on a barstool at the island, warming her hands on a mug of coffee. There’s a pink box of pastries on the counter in front of her that I recognize as being from the new bakery, Just Desserts, that opened on Main Street. Noah stands at the stove, tending to the frying pan. He’s wearing a white, button-up shirt tucked into dark jeans, and his hair looks like it’s still wet from a shower. When we’d parted ways last night, he told me he would see me today, but I thought he meant tonight for the gala. Not first thing in the morning.

When he turns to put a plate of food in front of my grandmother, he sees me lurking in the doorway and a smile brightens his handsome face.

“Chely,” he says. “Come. Sit. Eat.”

I slide onto the stool beside Abuelita, who raises her eyebrows at me.

“What did you do to him?” she asks, nudging me with her elbow.

Oh God. I resist the urge to hide my face in my hands and instead change the subject. “What are you doing here?”

Noah puts a plate of eggs and bacon in front of me, and then opens the pastry box, motioning for me to pick one. I take a chocolate cake donut and add it to my plate.

He leans down on his elbows and grins at me. “I couldn’t stay away.”

I take a deep breath through my nose as my grandmother makes a high-pitched humming noise.

“I like this one,” she says around a bite of eggs. “I wasn’t sure at first, but maybe he is deserving of you after all. Especially if he takes over breakfast duty.”

“I can cook breakfast,” I object.

Abuelita scoffs. “You get up five minutes before we have to leave. We’d be living off Pop Tarts if it were up to you.”

Noah laughs and turns away, taking the dirty pan to the sink and running water into it. Refusing to make eye contact with Abuelita, I eat my breakfast quickly.

Before I can escape, though, Noah finishes washing dishes and turns back to us, leaning against the counter and crossing his arms over his chest.
