Chapter Ten

Tobias

Hearing Yin’s happiness at him finding his mate filled Toby with unadulterated joy. He’d been alone his entire life, really, only seen as a future alpha. His father looked at him like a commodity. His siblings, except Candy, were standoffish in deference to his status.

Since coming to Thorne Bay, he felt a kinship to his fellow shifters, and that staved off the insanity of being a packless alpha. But this mating with Riley was another level of happiness. He felt acceptance with her. She even liked when he gave orders and got a little rough in the bedroom. Dom he was not, but an alpha, he was. Submission from others was something he craved.

Toby sat in his shift on the bank and tried to process how his life had changed. In such a short time, his pack had been decimated, he rushed cross-country with the aid of a supernatural motorcycle club, got hired by a lumberjack crew as security, found his fated mate, who turned out to be a mermaid.

He’d gone from an arranged mating, to betrayal and horrible grief and loneliness. But knowing Riley was at the end of that road he traveled, made every hardship and heartache worth it.

“Toby, are you okay? I’m almost there.”

He looked at his watch that lay on the ground beside him. Not even four minutes had passed. How fast did mermaids swim? “I’m just thinking about how much my life has changed recently. I’m so happy to have found you, sweetness.”

Riley’s head popped through the water’s surface. Her smile lit a fire in his belly. He imagined those sharp little teeth raking across his skin.

“I’m happy too.” She swam close to the shoreline and pulled her body up and out of the water. She turned, bringing her flippers to rest on the ground. Her beauty nearly took his breath.

“I’m not sure how to shift back.” She wrinkled her nose in concentration as she studied her gorgeous lavender-to-black shaded tail. When she closed her eyes and grunted, if Toby had been human, he would’ve burst out laughing. Instead, he shifted and reached out a hand to stroke her wet hair.

“Your beautiful new body hasn’t let you down yet, sweetness. Can I carry you inside where you might feel more comfortable? It might be easier to change in privacy at first.”

At her nod, he slid his arms under her tail, where her knees would be in her human form, then wrapped his other arm around her back. When she put her arms around his neck, he felt like he could float into the cabin.

Cool lips trailed kissed over his neck to his ear. He almost stumbled when she whispered, “I discovered something. Touching my gills is very erotic. I think we should play around with that. Besides, I want to bite you with my new mermaid teeth.”

“Oh, fuck, yeah.”

Relying on his wolf’s sense of direction to guide him back to the cabin, he kissed his mate senselessly. Toby used his tongue to explore her mouth, finding the sharper teeth stimulating.
