We were supposed to stay there for a few days, but they decided to go back to Tehran today.

Our trip back was during the day, so the train was full of sweaty and smelly people. Air barely got through the tiny windows. Sepideh and I got to sit together, and it allowed me to ask her some questions. Sepideh might actually tell me what was going on.

“Who was supposed to be chosen last night?”

“One of us, clearly,” she said with a blank expression on her face.

“No, Leyla was talking about someone specific.”

“If you know, then why are you asking?”

“Because I wasn’t filled in. I don’t know shit,” I said.

“Well, you weren’t chosen, so now, you can move on. We all went through it, but no one ever told me what to do after,” Sepideh said.

I had no idea what she was talking about, but I had to keep it going. “What did you do?”

“Nothing dramatic. I just broke up with him. What did your mom say?” she said.

“We don’t talk,” I said.

“Wait! When you say you don’t know shit, what do you mean? Were you never taught about us? The Sahers!” She lowered her voice when she said Sahers.

I shook my head.

“I’m sorry. I can’t help you with that. You need to talk to your mother,” she said with disbelief in her eyes. I had no idea what my family was hiding, but I had to find out. I couldn’t believe I was being deliberately left out just because I hadn’t spoken to my mother. Was she punishing me for being a brat?

At worst, I thought they spoke to dead spirits and played with tarot cards. Last night’s ceremony looked like something from a cult, and perhaps I wasn’t good enough to participate. This was why I always felt out of touch with reality and always experienced weird shit. She tried to keep me from my true self, and in some way, it worked its way into my life, anyway. I wanted to know what they excluded me from and if I even had the opportunity to change their verdict. She couldn’t keep me out forever.
