Susan fixed a wonderful meal of baked chicken, butter beans, and fresh green salad.

Jo had stopped by the video rental and got a couple movies. They sat on the couch and watched comedies. It was a nice quiet evening of laughter and nothing stressful. It felt good to be this relaxed together. It was almost like they were friends instead of ex-lovers.

Around 11pm, after the last movie Jo went out to the barn to check on Amelia. Her foal was due any time now and Jo wanted to make sure she would be okay.

Amelia had started pacing back and forth in circles and displaying all the signs that she was going to foal tonight. Even though there was nothing Jo could do, she wanted to be there in the barn with Amelia till the foal came.

She went back in the house and started a pot of coffee.

“You may as well go to bed. I’ll most likely be out there the better part of the night.” She told Susan.

“She’s gonna foal tonight and I need to keep an eye on her.”

Susan asked Jo if she needed her to do anything and Jo told her no. This was just a matter of time. She filled a thermos with coffee and went out to the barn.

Around 2 o’clock in the morning Amelia gave birth, to a beautiful healthy chestnut colt. Jo peered over the top rail into the stall. She was so proud. Like most rancher in Wyoming, Jo still appreciated the difference between horses and livestock. Horses were the standard by which you were measured, and hers were the gold standard.

Jo was waiting patiently for the colt get to its feet before going in the house and going to bed. Over the next couple of weeks as she got a feeling for the young colt’s characteristics Jo would pick out a name for this magnificent creature.

She was so involved in the miracle of life in front of her that she didn’t hear Susan approach the barn.

The next thing Jo knew the huge wooden door was opening a crack and a flashlight beam was searching across the dirt floor of the barn.

“Hey, you should be asleep.” Jo whispered loudly to Susan, trying not to disturb Amelia.

Jo held out her hand for Susan as the flashlight beam in front of her guided her toward Jo. Once Susan had a grip on Jo’s hand she clicked the flashlight off.

“She’s got herself a healthy bouncing baby boy. I’m just waiting till he starts bouncing till I leave her alone.”

Susan looked in the stall and saw Amelia licking her baby clean.

“Wow he’s so beautiful! Is she okay?”

“Yeah, she’s fine. She’s a good momma.”

They leaned against the wooden planks of the stall watching anxiously as the colt stammered and stumbled to get to its feet. Momma nudged him along and soon he made a wobbly stance.

Susan clasped her hands in excitement and turned to Jo whispering, “He did it! Look at him, he did it! That’s so cool, I’ve never seen anything like that before!”

Jo smiled at the tiny colt and chuckled a little.
