Chapter Seven

Why Am I Even Here?

Of course, Renée immediately tried to take up for both Jamie and Ne’Vaeh. “Girl, you know Ne’Vaeh is pregnant. Her hormones are all over the place.”

“Girl, please.” Anastasia rolled her eyes. “Her emotions have always been all over the place when it comes to Jamie.”

No one said anything, but I could tell by the looks on their faces that they silently agreed.

“Well, Jamie is in his feelings, too. He has the girl of his dreams sitting in the same room as the girl that, at one point, he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He wanted to prove to Serene that he cares about her, but you know he didn’t wanna hurt Ne’Vaeh.” Renée sighed, getting up from the sofa, going over to the bar.

“Yo, I didn’t know this was an album release party though.” Dedra shook her head. “I thought we all came here to enjoy ourselves and get away from our own fucked-up-ass families for a few days. Shit, I didn’t come here for drama. I could’ve stayed my black ass at home for this bullshit. Jamie’s all in his feelings about Ne’Vaeh’s married ass. Whose bright idea was it to invite the girl anyway?”

Anastasia and I both looked at Renée.

Renée rolled her eyes at the three of us. “Don’t start with me. That’s my cousin. Serene; you’re my chick, but that’s my cousin. She needed some time away from that big empty house in Miami, so I brought her here.”

“You could’ve took the girl to your house for real. You just brought her here to start some shit.” Joy shook her head at Renée.

“Oh hell nah, trick, don’t put this on me!” Renée wasn’t about to let everyone team up on her. “Jamie should have kept that song to himself. He’s too got-damn honest. He needs to learn how to keep his emotions in check. He’s scared to love Serene but scared to let Ne’Vaeh go. The nigga needed to make up his mind, so I made the nigga confront his past, Ne’Vaeh, so he can move on to his future, Serene.”

I didn’t hang around to find out whether or not Ne’Vaeh came back in the house. I went to the guesthouse with Amora and August. I let Jamie and his people have the mansion while I hung out with the two little ones. Everyone was starting to drink and get the party started, so they didn’t even really notice that I was gone. I sat with the kids and watched them play until they fell asleep on the couch in the living room. Around 11:00 that night, I showered, got into my nightgown, and laid down. I couldn’t sleep because all I could think about was Jamie singing that song to me. Not to mention, I could hear the music blasting from Jamie’s mansion.

Then, my phone chimed on the nightstand. I sat up from the bed and reached for my phone. I looked down at the display as another message chimed in.
