CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

PAIGE

Jeremy may be dead, but this man staring back at me had his eyes. No doubt about it. There were none like it on the planet.

Was this the son he tried to save with Jeffery’s blackmail attempts? It appeared that way. But what did this man want with me?

“What do you want?” I asked, sitting up with full awareness.

“I want to know what happened to my father,” he demanded, eyebrow raised in defiance.

I swallowed back the demon rising to the surface at my unstable emotions, and asked, “Who’s your father?”

But I knew what his answer was going to be before he even said it. Yet when the words came out of his mouth, I closed my eyes in both sadness and regret. Sadness for losing a man who meant the world to me for so long, and regret for not believing him about the extortion.

“Jeremy Morrow is my father. I believe you work with him?”

I nodded, opening my eyes to look into those haunting blue-green ones. “Yeah, I did.”

“Did?” The man looked straight ahead toward the pool, as if in deep thought. Finally he muttered, “He’s dead, isn’t he?”

I nodded again, eyes roaming the water and the individuals lounging in the pool. “Yeah.”

“It’s just as well. He worked so much that I rarely saw him as it was. I just never expected it to hurt so much.”

“Me either. Trust me.”

The guy searched my face before he said, “You two were close? I know he spoke about you from time to time, but nothing really more than a picture of you along with the family photographs.”

I blinked in shock. Jeremy had a picture of me? It was hard enough to think Jeremy had a life outside of the elite group we worked for, but I hadn’t known him to be anyone else. He never spoke of a life outside of our little faction, which made me wonder why.

I grunted. “Well, I wish I could say the same for you, but Jeremy didn’t talk about his home life much. I didn’t know you possibly existed until right before he died. Although I never thought it was the truth. Until now. What’s your name?”

“Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me with my father.” He shrugged. “My name’s Ian.”

My heart clenched at the name, remembering my baby brother who was killed in a fire that I caused.

I shook away those thoughts, and reached out to shake his hand. When he placed his hand in mine, I said, “Nice to meet you, Ian. My name’s Paige, although you already knew that.”

He chuckled and replied, “Nice to meet you, Paige.”

We leaned back in our chairs, lounging in the late afternoon sun. After mulling over how to ask, I finally asked, “So, is there another reason you wanted to find me?”

Ian let out a breath from his nose, shaking his head. “Yeah, but it’s almost pointless now. Especially since my father died. I’ll never get answers without him anyway.”

“Answers? About what?”

“Who my mother was. All I know is that she died when I was a baby.
