Daily Sketch

Describing his experiences [the survivor 180 ] said: "I came up on deck about 11.45 and saw an iceberg half the size of the Titanic . I, with others, was ordered off the boat deck, and with my own eyes saw a trimmer kicked off it by one of the officers. We went on the lower deck and watched the water creep higher and higher. Among the lifeboats which were leaving the ship in rapid succession I noticed one in which were two American millionaires. This boat which could have carried sixty people, only contained thirteen, made up of the two Americans, one lady and daughter, five firemen, a trimmer, two sailors, and an officer. On that boat were provisions, bread, biscuits, etc. sufficient for a week. The captain asked that this boat should return, but it did not. I saw Mr. Murdock [sic] shoot down an Italian. This officer performed heroic work all through. While seeing one of the last boats filled, and just after he had given directions about the men making way for women, someone shouted sarcastically, 'What about yourself, sir?' 'I'm going back to the ship in a minute or two,' replied Mr Murdock. Just before the Titanic went down her stern was high up out of the water, and I could plainly see the propellers and the bottom of the ship.
