Michael and Lisa sat waiting anxiously for her father’s verdict on their marriage plans, watching every movement of his face as he frowned and stood quite still pondering for several minutes.

‘Very well,’ he said at last. ‘But when she’s eighteen.’

Lisa leapt to her feet and hugged her father. ‘Thank you, Dadda! Thank you! And I can vote at the same time,’ she laughed.

Myfanwy looked both happy and relieved, for she knew things must be going on between her daughter and Michael – all those evening strolls along the river. Privately she was keeping her fingers crossed that Lisa wouldn’t suddenly stop ‘seeing’ and that Michael used common sense and restraint, like his future father-in-law.

The young lovers beamed with joy. Embraces and enthusiastic handshakes followed.

Tomos, who had been waiting outside with his toddling sister, was summoned, and they all sat together over a pot of tea and Welsh cakes to make plans for Rawson’s first wedding eight months hence. Just time enough for Michael to build a house, of bricks this time. He had his sights set on a higher piece of his own grazing land overlooking the settlement. News of the first wedding spread quickly and brought in offers of help and contributions along with the congratulations.

‘Myfanwy fach, there’s happy I am for you and especially for your Lisa. I can still see her little face after that swine Price. Ychafi, there’s no way I could ever like that man.’ She paused. ‘Scraggy and ugly he is, but I’ll say this, fair play – if it hadn’t been for Manny Price p’raps we wouldn’t have our husbands here now.’

Blod Trehearne sat heavily on one of the Rhys family’s wooden chairs.

Myfanwy smiled. ‘Exactly what Dav says. Manny Price – not short on courage, that one.’

‘Must be hard on Dafydd. There’s a man who tries it on with his daughter then saves his life. Takes some working out that does.’

Myfanwy nodded. ‘I think he’s done that.’

‘Hope it’s not through Redemption and God’s will again – all you get with some of them.’

Though Blod could be trusted beyond doubt, Myfanwy was anxious to leave the diminishing degree of her husband’s religious fervour to Dafydd himself. She kept her own counsel but knew that being seen to toe the Reverend Jenkins line in so young a community was obligatory, for the moment.

‘But whatever, Lisa’s lucky she’s found Michael. We’ve been worried about her – being so young and how she would feel about – well, men.’

‘Good God, yes – enough to turn any young woman! Never mind – be all right now. Michael’s a good boy he is.’ Blod rose from the chair and made her way to the door. ‘I’ll be getting her some Indian petticoats – beautiful they are. What about her frock?’

Putting her fingers to her lips Myfanwy whispered. ‘I’ve got a lovely cream linen sheet of my mam’s – never used – huge. It’ll work a treat and one of the Griffiths sisters has promised a few yards of lace – she’s started on it already.
