Jake’s cell phone rang at a little past three o’clock, just as he was passing a Utah town on Highway 90 with the crazy name of Panguitch. Who or what a Panguitch was, he had no idea; he was just glad that soon he’d be on I-15 and able to get up to a decent cruising speed of seventy-five miles an hour.

A glance down at the screen told him it was Connor calling, and for a second or two, he wondered if he should ignore the phone and let the call roll over to voicemail. For all he knew, Jeremy had decided to rat him out to the primus, and Connor was reaching out to tell Jake he was on a fool’s errand and that he needed to turn around and come straight back to Flagstaff.

However, issuing commands really didn’t seem like Connor’s style, so after a brief hesitation, Jake picked up the phone. Technically, he should have patched it through the truck’s Bluetooth system, but he’d been in such a hurry to get on the road that morning, he hadn’t bothered to do much of anything except double-check the adjustment of the mirrors and the seat. Jeremy had already threatened him with bodily injury if anything should happen to his truck, but Jake very much doubted anything was going to go wrong. He’d hit some clotty traffic here and there, but on the whole, everyone on the roads seemed pretty well-behaved. Besides, the big Dodge Ram wasn’t even two years old yet, and barely had ten thousand miles on the odometer. Jeremy was just being paranoid.

“Hey, Connor,” Jake said, sending a couple of quick glances to either side at the traffic surrounding him to make sure there weren’t any state troopers or local cops lurking nearby who might feel inclined to give him a ticket for ignoring the hands-free law. “What’s up?”

Connor sounded less than amused. “‘What’s up’ is that I just got a call from Genoveva Castillo.”

“Really? Why?”

“Agent Lenz just paid her a visit. Somehow, he managed to track Addie to Santa Fe.”

Shit. Trying to sound calm, Jake asked, “Genoveva didn’t tell him anything, did she?”

“Of course not. She fobbed him off with some story about having a cousin who looked just like her, and he bought it.”

“Does she have a cousin like that?”

“No. It was some sort of an illusion she cast on a family photo album she had lying around. Luckily, he didn’t seem to see anything strange about her story, and he left. After that, he went around town, trying to track Addie down, but according to Genoveva’s spies, he didn’t have any luck. He left after that — I guess a private jet picked him up at the Santa Fe airport.”

Jake reflected that the spy network of a witch clan definitely surpassed any modern surveillance systems. No matter what might be going on in a clan’s territory, there was generally someone around to witness it and pass the information along. “So, we’re in the clear.
