Chapter 6

So let’s get to the good stuff—Faerie sexuality.

What is the hold these creatures have on us through their beauty, their seduction, their strangeness and their mystique? The way they lure us in, tantalizing us, teasing us. “Touch me,” they seem to say. “I’m just over here. Am I not beautiful? Do I not tempt you? Is my music not lovely? Is my song not the sweetest you’ve ever heard?”

Your brain knows. Your brain says, “Get out of here as quick as you can!” Because you’ve heard all the stories, you’ve seen the movies, you’ve pored over the books. Don’t eat the food, you’ve been warned. Don’t speak, don’t come too close, and whatever you do, don’t dance in a circle of toadstools! Oh, there’s so much to remember, as your mind makes checklists of those red flags.

But your body says something different. “Go,” it coaxes, “just a little nearer. Smell that delicious scent. Maybe just a quick brush of the hand against that alabaster skin would be safe.” You look at the slight blush on this creature’s soft, pale cheek. “What must those long, thin fingers feel like when stroking my arm? What must those full lips feel like on mine?” And the song tempts you, beyond the pitiful reason of your tiny little brain. So beautiful. You’ve never heard anything like it. Yet it sounds so familiar, so like everything you’ve ever heard.

And that’s the end, isn’t it? I mean, once you’ve thought those thoughts, the little temptress (or tempter) has you. There’s no turning back, no return, no salvation. Oh, you’ll have such pleasure. For an hour, or an evening, or for seven years. But you know what’s bound to happen, don’t you? Even as you’re being caressed, kissed, wrapped in her velvet mantle, you know. Seven years turns to centuries. Or you become the tithe to Hell. Or worse, she leaves you forever, and you are left alone to wander the sea strand yearning, wanting, weeping. Then there’s always the possibility of sudden death; your ship hits the rocks, you fall into her sweet arms, and in that all-satisfying caress you are pulled down into the murky depths. But maybe that would be better than living without her?

And don’t give me that look of sad surprise. After all, you’ve heard the stories, you’ve read the books. You knew it was coming. Don’t say, with your last, gasping breath, you weren’t warned.

In all of the stories, over and over, the Faeries tempt us with their sexuality. Janet and Tam Lin, Thomas and the Elf Queen, the poor young lad who courted a Selkie; all of them were seduced by these impossibly beautiful creatures, and fell prey to their sexual wiles.

Let us look now at Faerie sexuality and seduction. Sometimes, everything turns out all right in the end. Usually it does not. Let’s examine the good, the bad and, of course, the ugly aspects of Faerie sex.
