Chapter Nine

I’d like to say I put up a fight, but Fin had a gun, and I had Liam to worry about.

Fin had me down and restrained before I could even think of the right way to get away from him.

He didn’t put anything on Liam, thank God, but the kid wouldn’t leave my side.

He followed Fin as he dragged me through the halls and up to the top floor of the building.

And when Fin tossed me down onto the floor of a small closet, Liam willingly climbed in after us.

For two hours, he made us sit there in silence. We listened to the gunshots and the screams, and we listened as they slowly tapered away.

I couldn’t think about what that meant. What that meant for Blue or Billy or Dahlia. What that meant for all those kids and the rest of the club. What that meant for everyone seeking refuge here.

“You did good, boy,” Fin suddenly said into the silence.

I looked over at Liam as he quietly cried.

“You know, Willow, he showed me the gap in the wall. The way out. The lapse in the guards there. Very sneaky, our Liam.”

I kept my mouth shut and glared at him.

He crouched down and pinched my chin.

“I wanted the little one,” he whispered, “but Liam is a nice runner-up, don’t you think?”

“What are you talking about?” I asked through my teeth.

“We’ll have such a beautiful family again, honey. Just you, me, and Liam.”

I stared at him, confused and trembling.

“For now,” he whispered and ran his gun down my belly. “Maybe we’ll have a few more.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Our family, honeybear,” he crooned. “The little one cried all the time anyway, ever since his daddy ate my bullet.”

I sucked in a breath, my eyes stinging. “You killed Blue’s father?”

He nodded solemnly. “His mommy was already dead, so, you see, he needed you. And then I found you.” He kissed my cheek, and I cringed away. “But we have Liam now, so our family is complete.”

“You’re insane,” I breathed, terror and panic filling my veins. I didn’t know how to fight against insanity.

“That’s not nice.” He pursed his lips. “Liam, tell your mother that’s not nice.”

Liam gaped at him, shuddering.

“Tell her!”

Liam jumped. “That’s not nice.”

“Good, good.” Fin nodded to himself. “Now we just have to wait for them all to die, and this house will be ours.”

Liam’s hand grabbed onto mine from behind me.

“I gotta check,” he mumbled to himself. “I gotta make sure they all die.” He spun toward us, crouching down again. “You watch over your momma, Liam.” He pointed his gun at Liam. “If you don’t listen, you’ll be grounded.” He tapped the gun to his temple. “You don’t want to be grounded, do you?”

Liam shook his head.

“Good boy,” he purred. Then he turned to me and smashed his lips into mine. “You’ll be good too, honeybear. Won’t you?”

I nodded, holding my breath.

He nodded back and smacked me across my face. I winced, licking the blood from my upper lip.
