Ben’s welcome back to Kunduz, where his Green Beret team was still suffering through long missions and miserable living conditions, was similarly tempered with apprehension. Everyone was tired, hungry, and fed up with the strains of a lengthy deployment to a remote area.

Feelings of jealousy had also intensified about Ben’s two-week “vacation,” leading my brother to ask one trusted fellow Green Beret if he had done something wrong.

“No,” said the soldier, who had suddenly become embarrassed when he remembered why Ben had just gone home for a second time. “There’s just been a lot going on over here.”

Despite Ben’s ongoing anguish paired with the trepidation he experienced upon his return, he still took the time to offer spiritual counsel to any Green Beret who was struggling to keep the faith during the deployment’s closing months.

“You have to read the Bible like it’s a love letter from God to you,” Ben told one fellow soldier, Staff Sergeant Kevin Flike, during the deployment. “Pore over every word and search for the meaning of every sentence—every nuance.”

Ben would never know it, but the spiritual guidance he provided to his Green Beret teammates helped spare at least one soldier from suicide. While Medals of Honor are rightfully handed out to war heroes who shield their teammates from bullets and bombs, it makes me equally proud to know that compassionate soldiers like Ben often protect their brothers- and sisters-in-arms from potentially harming themselves.

The stress of combat is overwhelming enough to break any American warrior. It is an ongoing issue that demands our country’s constant attention.
