ISMENE

I shall not recount what I suffered in seeking you out, Father,

as I do not want to endure it twice, once in the suffering

and again in the retelling. I have come to let you know

of the plight of your two ill-fated sons. At first

they were content to leave the throne to Creon

and not pollute the city, as they looked clear-eyed

on the ancient curse of our blood, which had filled

your house with misery. But now a god and their perversity

have sparked the thrice-wretched quest of each to seize

the rule and royal power. The younger in age

has deprived first-born Polynices of the throne,

and driven him from the city. And Polynices,

I heard in Thebes, has fled to Argos and there

acquired a new allegiance through marriage

and staunch allies in war, so that the honor of Thebes

will either be vanquished or raised to the sky.

Father, these are not just empty words,

but the terrible truth. I still cannot see

when the gods will finally take pity on your plight!
