Fresh Fig Shake
Until I was a teenager I had no idea that figs came in any form other than Newtons. The summer I was thirteen, I went shopping with my sister Amanda at the Wholesale Produce Market, near where she lived in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. She bought a tray of fresh figs, and when I bit into one I stopped dead in my tracks. Sweet, tender, honeyed, and floral, this fig was no Newton!
In addition to their singular flavor, figs also lend their lush texture to this uniquely velvety shake. Using a dark-skinned variety such as Black Mission imparts a lovely purple color, as well. Make this shake in the height of fig season—midsummer through early fall.
