ROBERT

Chapter Eight

Defence

I stood amongst the tribes of Ireland with my long sword pointing to the floor as I used it to lean on with both my hands, it was the only fighting tool I had other than my fists. I had decided to leave the spear behind after taking Aran’s advice. I observed the immense difference in weapons and clothing of those around me. Adahy still wore his jeans but had replaced his shirt and jacket with a suede gilet that he left untied. He had painted his face red and drawn black markings over this. His weapons were a large axe, a small knife about four inches long and a bow which was two thirds of his own height and a supply of arrows. Alania held in her hands what I later learnt was called a short sword and a small shield for protection. She wore a skin tight vest top and crop army style trousers with a hunting dagger tucked in the top of them. I had never seen her look so masculine before. She was always very feminine in comparison to Kellan.

Some of those fighting were dressed in modern day attire and others from over the centuries but all was sufficient for the purpose. Not one female warrior wore a skirt, they all had either trousers, jeans, crops or shorts on. I suppose skirts weren’t the easiest of things to fight in, although it had never stopped others in the past.

All conversations fell silent as we listened to the faint marching sound that could now be heard drawing closer. I thought I would be scared at this point, but as the adrenaline started to pump around my body I felt nothing but anticipation for all that was to follow. I was definitely mentally ready and Alania turned to me to confirm this to me. “Rob, I am proud to stand alongside you as my friend and brother, you are fit for the cause, I can sense this in you.”

“I agree. Your aura radiates incredible audacity and confidence,” Adahy concurred. I wasn’t sure if that was a compliment or an insult so I just shrugged my shoulders and fixed my eyes on the top of the hills that lay some distance ahead of us.

In the air above the landscape a squadron of dragons appeared, each with their own rider yielding a weapon. Then a large population of foot soldiers came into view as they started their descent down the large bank to reach the level ground of the meadow. They all wore the same black trousers and tops with armour for protection on their torsos. There was no sign of Mab, but her army formed a line and then filled in behind with more rows. As they continued to come it was clear their numbers were much greater than ours, even with the added help of the collective tribes of Ireland. They filled the whole of the land in front of us and reached almost as far back as the hill top itself.
