Tai

Watching Bianca push out Tabias, and hearing the obscenities that flew out of her mouth at rapid speeds, had Tai wondering if she ever wanted to have a child. The way Bianca stretched open in order to fit her son’s head through such a tight space made Tai sick to the stomach. The sight was supposed to be a beautiful one, but Tai could’ve skipped that part. Nonetheless, when a beautiful yellow baby was presented to Bianca, Tai, and Bianca’s mother Mrs. Pennington, who had driven down along with Bianca’s father and older sister, tears sprang up in her eyes and they hadn’t stopped since. She was instantly in love with Tabias, and she couldn’t wait for her turn to hold the little baby boy. Unfortunately, in Mrs. Pennington’s eyes, Tai was in the very last position to get to hold her nephew, and rudely she grabbed the little bundle of joy out of Bianca’s hands after the nurses had cleaned him up and returned him to his mother. Tabias whimpered as he settled in his grandmother’s arms.

“He looks just like you,” Mrs. Pennington informed her daughter, who was nearly sleep from exhaustion.

“I think he looks like his daddy,” Tai piped up, staring into her nephew’s beautiful face. He did indeed look just like her brother, from the shape of his face down to his nose. The baby was gorgeous. Tai ignored Mrs. Pennington’s eye rolling. She didn’t know what this old lady’s problem was, but she was determined not to let it mess up her moment. After ten long minutes, the old lady finally allowed Tai to hold her nephew, but not until Tai threatened to get ugly. If this was any clue as to how life would be with the baby boy, then Tai knew that she had a lot of years of fighting. Instead of allowing herself to focus on the negatives though, she enjoyed the time she got to spend holding her nephew.

Soon enough, the nurses came and grabbed him, and both Tai and Bianca’s mother followed her into the room, where little Tabias was poked, pricked, weighed, and measured. Bianca’s other family members, as well as Gideon, Earnest, and some of the other elders who had been in the game at one point, and a part of Tank and Tai’s life ever since their father was alive. Everyone was filled with joy watching through the glass window, taking pictures of Tank’s child. Since Tank’s life was ended, the baby was all they had.

The unfortunate part was that none of them, except for Tai, hardly knew Bianca at all. They’d all been by to check on her after Tank’s funeral a few times, but none of the old men knew how to comfort a pregnant widow. Quite frankly, being around her sent them all back into mourning, so as her pregnancy progressed, they stopped coming by and just sent their sympathies in cash gifts that Bianca didn’t need. Tank had set her up for life, if she was careful how she spent all that he’d left her.
