PANIC ATTACKS, AGORAPHOBIA,
AND GOOD OL’ SOUTHERN COKING
I wish all cases of fear were as easily erased as Ann’s. And perhaps they would be with early intervention. In fact, if Ann’s parents had not sought help for their daughter’s high anxiety, she might have developed a full-blown phobia. Or perhaps this relatively small trauma could have exploded into a feeling of generalized anxiety—that nothing she did would turn out, that it was better not to try or risk. Then she’d be experiencing generalized anxiety disorder, which could escalate into panic attacks or other more serious phobias.
Paula Deen, who is one of the most popular stars of the Food Network, looks like a woman who has always been happy, gregarious, open armed, and ready to tackle life with a grin. With her deep Southern accent and homegrown laughter, it is really hard to imagine Paula being anything other than the life of the party. She owns one of Savannah’s most successful restaurants, The Lady & Sons, with lines that wrap around the block most evenings and weekends. At midlife (when most are winding down their activity level), she appeared in the movie Elizabethtown, married a sea captain who is the love of her life, and rides herd over her big, beautiful, blended family. If you listen to her for five minutes, you will instantly know two things: One, this woman loves good food drippin’ with butter . . . and lots of it. Two, she loves life to the hilt. “Child, you just have no idea how good it is going to get!” is just one of her many upbeat, Paula-isms.
With Paula bringing so much Southern comfort and sunshine into the lives of thousands of viewers, many of her fans were surprised to discover that after a period of multiple life stresses at a young age, Paula’s Basement of Giant Fears went on hyperalert. Those fears stomped around telling her that life would never be safe, that those you love most will be taken away, that the only solution is to stay put and lock the doors.
And so she did . . . for nearly two decades! In her charming and vulnerable book It Ain’t All About the Cookin’, Paula wrote, “I was twenty-three years old. I had two babies under three, a sour marriage, a sixteen-year-old brother, and our momma and poppa were both dead. My spirit was broken. My mind wasn’t doing too good either.”
Losing her parents at age nineteen began the spiraling down of her former sense of peace and security. The shock of so many multiple losses took its toll, and she began to live in fear that she would die or, worse, that someone she loved would be taken away. During that time in our society, panic attacks and agoraphobia were not talked about much, so Paula never had a name for this awful experience that had turned her from a spunky, outgoing cheerleader into a frightened woman. After her mother died, she stayed home as much
