âThe star has arrived!â Koji announced as he let me into the house on Thursday. I took my shoes off and entered to see the kitchen transformed.
âWhoa,â I said, jaw dropping despite wanting to play it cool in front of Harley. Not only was the kitchen different, but so was she. She smiled so brightly at me that I stumbled back against Koji. He caught me, his hands warm on my arms.
I expected Harley to glare at me, but instead she spun to the kitchen with her hands in the air like she was a fairy sprinkling wishing dust in the air.
âKoji and I worked on this all morning,â she said.
Ah, thatâs why she was in such a good mood. Sheâd had him all to herself for hours already. Harley was wearing cream shortalls with a ribbed pink tank top. I was glad Iâd worn a fitted white tee with the navy-blue skirt that Charli had left at my house the last time sheâd slept over. It really didnât matter anyway since Iâd be wearing an apron over my outfit the entire time.
I couldnât lie though, not even to myself. The kitchen setup was spectacular. Koji and Harley had cleared the kitchen of any distractions. Theyâd moved the canisters and knickknacks off the back counter. Koji had set up his phone on a selfie stick, which I knew stabilized video recordings. And everything Iâd told Koji I would need for this recipe was laid out neatly.
âItâs perfect,â I said. Because it was.
Harley clapped her hands once. âRight! Letâs get going. Sana, you stand over there. Koji, youâre going to film from back here to get the best angle.â
âWait,â I said. âLetâs keep the same format as the first episode. Koji can record from above the counter and just show my hands and what Iâm making.â
Harley gave me an approving nod. âGood point. Youâre not the most important part of the video.â
âThatâs not true at all,â Koji said, moving next to me at the counter. âSana is the show. Sheâs the star and the creator. Without her, there are no adorable rice ball creatures.â
I tilted my face up at Koji, who gazed at me. My cheeks got warm.
âYeah, yeah,â Harley said. âGot it. But Sana makes a good point. We donât want to veer off from our format now that weâre establishing an audience.â
I felt stuck. I didnât want to agree with Harley since she was only trying to shift the focus away from me, but I didnât want to argue with her because I couldnât risk showing my face on camera. Itâs not like my parents would ever come across the video, but what if Charli did?
Koji nudged me with his shoulder and rested against mine. âYouâre the star power, Sana. Whatever you say.â
âI think itâs better to focus on the food.â
âGreat,â Harley shouted, making both me and Koji flinch. âKoji, get over here and start recording. Weâll edit tonight and post. Itâs important not to let too much time go between episodes.
