Forty-three minutes later Future stepped out from Gary’s Discount Printing, a small shop in the middle of a strip mall in the textile district. Going out of Business Sale was painted across its window in block letters.

“Got ’em!” Future said, with a smile on his face and a brown paper bag in his hands.

Noah stood with his arms crossed. “I don’t understand why we had to use the money Grandpa gave me.”

“As opposed to the money he gave me?” Future asked.

Noah shrugged. “We could’ve at least split it.”

“It’s literally the same money,” Future said. “But I used my version of it on my last trip. Trust me, this was the best hundred dollars you’ve ever spent.”

“I hope so,” Noah said. “I was saving for a new bowling ball.”

“I know,” Future said. “I figure we can ask for one for our birthday. Could you imagine if we had one for the tournament? We definitely would’ve been able to skip to the finals this week. Come on. That’s our ride.”

Noah sighed, and the boys hurried through the strip mall’s parking lot to a city bus pulling up to the curb. They climbed on, flashed their passes, and sat in the back. The bus lurched forward.

Noah nodded at the paper bag between them. “So?”

“Open it,” Future said.

Noah reached inside and pulled out a red T-shirt from a stack of ten. Vote for Noah was stenciled across the front in white.

Noah smiled. “Good slogan.”

“Feels more clear and to the point, right? Kind of like a walking billboard. Everyone is going to want one after they see Gregg wear it.”

“How am I going to get Gregg to wear one of these?”

“You’ll figure it out.”

Noah’s forehead wrinkled. How would he accomplish that? He shot a finger into the air. “Oh! By the way, Gregg dropped out of the race like you said he would.”

“Told you,” Future said. “How’d you do at school?”

“I think terrific, actually,” Noah said. “Big laughs in Jones’s class and in the hallway. Definitely getting noticed by some kids who’ve never given me the time of day. The whole basketball team seems to be coming around.”

Future nodded. “Perfect.”

“How did everything go with you?” Noah asked.

Future shook his head. “Not great. I don’t think I made any progress brainstorming ideas to inspire Mom. I spent most of the day flipping through physics books at the library. They kind of gave me a headache. I was planning to check out as many books as I could and leave them around Mom’s stuff in the study, but the librarian told me I couldn’t because we never returned that book about African wildlife three years ago.”

Noah groaned. “I lost that.”

“I know. The photographs were so cool.” Future sighed. “Anyway, I did everything I could to convince the librarian to let me check out a couple science books, but she wasn’t having it, so I left empty-handed.”

“Bummer,” Noah said.

Future nodded at the T-shirts in the bag. “You should take the rest of those out of there.”

“Why?”

“Because you need to put that bag on your head.
