WHERE’S IT FROM?

GERMAN MEASLES

This has nothing to do with Germany and everything to do with how words get changed over the years. In this instance, the word ‘German’ is a corruption of the word ‘germane’ – meaning alike or akin. German Measles was once known as Germane (to) Measles, the viral illness to which it is related. From there, it was a short journey to its current name (although the medical name is, of course, Rubella).

The Funniest Joke in the World?

In 2002, after much research, British scientists identified what they called ‘The Funniest Joke in the World’. Here it is:

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his mobile phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: ‘My friend is dead! What can I do?’ The operator, in a calm, soothing voice, says: ‘Just take it easy. I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.’ There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy’s voice comes back on the line. He says: ‘OK, now what?’
