OVERCOMING ALL ODDS
It was interesting to see Shylo operate from a new place within herself, now she was living beyond the veil. She certainly seemed to have a distinctly different personality to the girl who came to me for her consultations. She seemed much more assertive, more direct and forthright. I would later learn from her mother, Jeanie, that this was typical of Shylo’s previous personality—before her horrific car accident when she was just sixteen.
Her close school friend, Kelly, had been driving the car that fateful day. Kelly had not long had her licence and so was relatively inexperienced. Shylo had been warned only the week before not to ride in the car with Kelly behind the wheel. They had decided to leave Etna High School sometime after 1.20pm, to drive up to Etna Creek on Salmon Mountain, planning to return for Kelly’s volleyball practice by midafternoon. Etna Creek was where local teenagers often hung out with friends.
After only a brief visit to Etna Creek, the girls decided to return to school. With their favourite music playing on the CD player at Shylo’s feet, the girls were enjoying the music and each other’s company. As they emerged from the more densely-forested section of the mountain, onto a flat section of road surrounded by picturesque meadows, they entered the section of roadway locals referred to as Grease Flat.
The car was gathering speed. They approached a bend and, for whatever reason, Kelly took the corner way too fast, losing control. The car ploughed off the road at high speed and smashed head-on into a massive old pine tree several feet off the roadway. It was 2.05pm on that warm September afternoon, the same time Shylo had been born.
The impact happened as Shylo leant forward to change the CD player, and the front left side of Shylo’s head took the full brunt of the collision. Her skull was fractured and her brain traumatised, leaving Shylo with a severe brain injury. Both girls sat slumped and unconscious, trapped in the car crushed against the tree. And both were critically injured.
Shylo’s Aunt Margaret had arrived at the school earlier that day, to pick up her older daughter Amber. She chatted briefly with Shylo and Kelly, then left with Amber, heading first to the grocery store, then to collect the mail and fuel the car. With her daughter Amber, her younger daughter Boston and a friend visiting for the weekend, they drove out of town and entered Grease Flat at the base of Salmon Mountain. Loaded up with supplies and their pets, they were heading for their weekend home on the other side of Salmon Mountain. The scenic journey would take them a little over two hours across the forested mountain, then a relaxing weekend awaited them.
When Margaret entered Grease Flat, it was only minutes after the crash. Little did she realise she was about to experience one of the most challenging moments she would have to ever face. They stopped at the scene, hoping to help the driver and passenger trapped inside.
