The recovery factor r represents the fraction of ordered kinetic energy that is lost to heat by friction. It has been found that the recovery factor is well correlated by a function of the Prandtl number of the gas, as shown here:

The quantity m=1/2 for laminar flow and 1/3 for turbulent flow. Here he and hw are the enthalpies at the edge of the boundary layer and at the wall, respectively, and Pre is the Prandtl number evaluated at the edge of the boundary layer.

It is often suggested that rather than evaluating the flow properties denoted by subscript e at the temperature Te, they should be evaluated at an intermediate temperature, called the reference temperature, T∗. The associated reference enthalpy is defined as follows:
