And that’s how, two nights later, she ended up standing in front of a large house in one of those neighborhoods that measured the residents’ lawns during the summer.

“How did I let you talk me into this?”

He gave her a playful bump with his elbow. “You’ve known my brother your entire life.”

“Not well.”

“I’m starting to think you don’t know anybody well, Miss Introvert. But he’s not a stranger. And you’ve met my sister-in-law several times.”

“Briefly.”

“You know they’re watching us right now, right?”

She snorted. “This is the kind of neighborhood where literally everybody is watching us right now. It’s like a condensed version of Blackberry Bay, except with higher taxes.”

“And you’re stalling.”

He laced his fingers through hers so when he started walking, she either had to follow him or end up in a tugging war on the sidewalk. She chose to follow, since she knew on some level that she was being silly. Chris and Marcy were nice people.

It was the questions she was dreading. Their mothers were busy basking in the joy of a new grandbaby on the way, so if anybody was going to ask tough questions, it would be Brady’s older brother.

“Uncle Brady!”

They were barely inside the door before Brady had to let go of her hand to catch his nephew, who obviously trusted his uncle would catch him if he flung himself at him. Reyna watched them with amusement. Between Sophie and CJ, she was figuring out that kids liked to greet people by yelling their names as loudly as possible.

She looked up to see a smaller version of CJ toddle around the corner before falling over sideways. Before she was about to step forward—to see if he was okay or needed help—he gave a screeching laugh and started crawling toward them at a remarkable speed.

Seeing Brady with his nephews made her heart ache with how sweet and funny he was. It was clear the boys adored him and that the feeling was entirely mutual.

Marcy appeared to rescue him after a few minutes, and she smiled at Reyna. “It’s good to see you again. I’m glad you could come tonight.”

“Thank you for inviting me.”

“How come you’re not in the hot tub?” Brady asked, and Marcy blushed slightly.

“Because we have a guest.” She gestured for Reyna to follow her into the kitchen. “I teach school, so by Friday night I’m ready to soak in the hot tub and let the guys take care of the kids and make dinner.”

“That sounds like a perfect Friday night. Especially if Chris cooks as well as Brady does.”

“Why do you think I married him?” Marcy asked in a stage whisper her husband was meant to hear.

Chris waved from the stove. “Hi, Reyna. How have you been?”

“Good, thanks.” Brady was in the fridge, holding up drink options, and she nodded when he held up a bottle of water, which he tossed to her.

“Reyna and I are going to go in the other room so you guys can do your thing.” She started to walk away, but then stopped and pointed to the calendar on the fridge.
