Corndog

Several different men have staked paternity claims to the corndog. One, an Oregonian man named George Boyington said that he was the first to skewer, cornmeal-batter, and deep-fry hot dogs in 1942 after rain ruined a batch of buns during a picnic. Two thousand miles south in Texas, the Fletcher brothers were reputed to have given up their careers as vaudevillians that same year to sell “corny dogs” at America’s biggest state fair in Dallas. To this day, the lightly sweet, salty, crunchy, pleasantly gritty corndog remains the quintessential portable meal of American fair-grounds (and boardwalks, ballparks, and certain school cafeterias). As anyone who’s ever suffered a corndog burn on the roof of his or her mouth can attest, a corndog’s shell—a hush puppy, basically—is also the world’s most effective insulation material.
