Self-portrait in Studio Coat, Hans Sturzenegger.

If what he’d seen of the continent was a disappointment, his engagement with the sacred books of the East – the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavadgita and the Theravada Buddhist Suttas – was only to intensify upon his return. Siddhartha, written between 1919 and 1922 and during a period when Hesse also encountered Alfred Hillebrandt’s From the Brahmanas and Upanishads, was to be the product of that reading. The novel, which is set in India in the fifth century BC, relates the story of Siddhartha, the son of a Brahmin priest, who must leave his faith and family to discover the truth for himself. The India it depicts is mythic. And perhaps, therefore, all the more universal for not being based on a place that might have shone less brightly had Hesse actually visited it for himself.
