One example of a feedstock recipe from a commercial operation is Big Red Worms in Nebraska. Jeremiah Picard mixes food waste with horse manure bedding and wood chips. He has an 80-by-30-foot (24 × 9 m) concrete pad with four aerated static pile compost bins that each hold 20 cubic yards (15 m3) of material. He composts the mixture for about 40 days, turning the material in the bin halfway through. He uses some of the pre-compost as his feedstock for his worms; the rest of the compost is cured and then sold.

After you develop what appears to be a suitable feedstock recipe, it’s important to test it on your earthworms, and I describe how to do so later in this chapter.
