Getting Back to Our Roots

As the sun begins to set, casting a lovely pink glow over my garden, I sit and think of the gardeners before me. My mind drifts to my own parents, who looked to the land to provide their girls with nutritious food, planting within me the seed of sustainability. I think of my grandparents, who quietly and successfully marked their agricultural year by the moon and her cycles, teaching me to value the old ways. And I can’t forget my dear old friend Stella, who taught me how to find the magick in every bud, leaf, and flower. She taught me patience and reminded me of the Goddess’s lessons whispered gently on the breeze. And I am proud to pass these seeds of wisdom on to my own children.

So as you plunge your own hands into the dark, loamy earth, think of your ancestors, who tirelessly worked the land to provide sustenance for their families and seed so that the next generation might thrive. Remember the wise women and cunning men who gleaned medicine and magick from their gardens, meadows, and hedgerows, and recall the tales of magick and metamorphosis in the gardens of myth and lore. For a garden does transform us. In the garden a troubled soul finds solace, a hungry mind finds fulfillment, and a spiritless heart learns to beat anew.

Garden Blessing

I hope you have enjoyed our magickal romp through the garden. Is there dirt under your fingernails? Are there scratches on your knees? Good—it means you have been working hard. How about the kids? Is their hair tangled with leaves and debris? Are there holes in the knees of their britches? I hope so. It means they’re having fun. Now that you have planted your new garden, it’s time to bless it. You can perform the blessing I have included below or use it as inspiration for your own garden blessing. Enjoy the delights of your new garden!

We are calling upon Cerridwen to bless the garden and its transformative powers.

You will need:

Flat stone or tile

Small cauldron or fireproof pot

Green tea light or small candle

Take the family into the garden. On a flat stone set a small cauldron or fireproof pot with a green tea light or small candle in it. Light the candle and say together,

Cerridwen, we call upon your transformative hand to bless this space.

A haven for bird, bee, and faerie, this garden now to grace

With the power of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit—divine.

Bless this garden and all that who enter it with solace there to find.

Blessed be!

Let the candle safely burn out.
