It was then that Zak Bagans seemed to go berserk.

In what he describes as “an overwhelming feeling of anger and hatred,” Bagans launched into a screaming, violent tirade directed squarely at Goodwin. When the episode aired on television, only a small part of this section was included due to the aggressive nature of Zak’s behavior. Bagans claimed that he was temporarily possessed by something demonic, and that a “red filter” descended over his vision during the entire incident. He appears to be overwhelmed by the experience, and said afterward that he suffered a brief episode of memory loss toward the end of the event. “I remember screaming,” Bagans intoned into the camera, “but I don’t remember knowing what I was saying.”

Leaving the building seemed to cure the symptoms almost immediately, although Bagans does subsequently take pains to point out that this is the first time the Ghost Adventures crew has ever had to stop an investigation part-way through due to a member becoming incapacitated. So concerned were they that the crew felt it necessary to break out a container of protective holy oil, which had been blessed by a priest beforehand. The crew anointed themselves with the oil and said a prayer, hoping that it would ward off any dark spirits that may have targeted them during the course of their stay on Poveglia.

After a short rest, the Ghost Adventures crew regrouped and headed out into the burial fields. While hacking their way through some of Poveglia’s thickest vegetation, they smelled what Bagans believed to be the odor of burning. The implication is that it was perhaps a holdover from the cremation of so many burial pits on the island, although one is forced to wonder whether the power of suggestion (knowing the history associated with body-burning there) coupled with an entirely natural odor, did not simply combine and lead him to a false conclusion. Then the crew heard a loud yell from somewhere in front of them. More voices appeared to call out to them as they reached the burial fields, particularly after Zak donned a replica plague doctor’s mask in the hopes of provoking a greater reaction from the resident spirits.

It would be entirely reasonable to explain the rustling noises heard in the surrounding grass as being some of the island’s native wildlife. The same cannot be said, however, for the heavy footsteps that were heard approaching the team across the wooden canal bridge, immediately before something unseen knocked over their heavy, tripod-mounted light. The night-vision camera mounted in this area would later go on to capture what Bagans described as some kind of misty white shape, moving across the burial field to the accompaniment of unexplained voices.
