On Board the Nagato

At 0847, Rear Admiral Kobe received the signal from the Yamato that she had observed an enemy aircraft carrier suffering explosions to port. The Nagato’s lookouts reported to Kobe a large group of aircraft bearing 030° to port at a distance of 38,360 yards at 0850. Kobe ordered the main battery and smaller guns to fire in anti-aircraft mode. He then received a signal from the Yamato on spotting three enemy aircraft carriers bearing 135°, distance 38,360 yards. This was followed by another signal from the Yamato at 0852 of an enemy aircraft carrier being sighted bearing 220°, distance 30,688 yards.[375] Two minutes later, a plane was spotted bearing 105° at a distance of 15,344 yards, and then at 0856 eight aircraft were spotted on the port side bearing 020 degree with three more aircraft approaching from 130°. Kobe gave orders to open fire on the aircraft at 0858. The AA guns began firing, but the planes passed by, so the order to check fire was quickly given. At 0900, Ugaki sends a signal from the Yamato, “First Battleship Division turn towards the port side enemy aircraft carriers.” By 0901, Kobe observed the Gambier Bay sinking. She was bearing 075° relative to the starboard bow. The Nagato didn’t open fire on the sinking carrier but continued to follow the Yamato.[376]
