As improbable as it seemed at the time, Schopenhauer was eventually recognized for his philosophical genius. In the 1820s, during an ill-fated career as a university lecturer, he couldn’t attract a single student to his classes; by the 1850s, people would crowd into the Englischer Hof, Schopenhauer’s favorite Frankfurt restaurant, just to watch the eccentric thinker eat lunch.

It wasn’t difficult to catch Schopenhauer satisfying his prodigious appetite; he regularly dined at the Englischer Hof as part of a daily routine that rarely varied during the twenty-seven years he lived in Frankfurt. Schopenhauer rose every day at seven A.M., took a bath, drank a cup of coffee, and wrote until noon. Then he played the flute for an hour and headed to the Englischer Hof for lunch. After his meal, he read until four and then went for a brisk two-hour constitutional, accompanied by his poodle. At six P.M. he stopped by the library to read the London Times and in the evening had dinner at a restaurant, attended the theater or a concert, and was in bed by ten P.M.
