Notice that last phrase. The witness from God became a written revelation from God to His people. God the Holy Spirit inspired John to write what He wanted us to know in a language we could understand. Why? So we would have a permanent record of God’s witness.

The result of inspiration is this: because of the overseeing and superintending work of the Spirit in the recording of Scripture, what you and I have is the inerrant, authoritative canon of Scripture. In the Bible, we have the authoritative revelation of God preserved in a written record. Those who reject the inspiration of Scripture have to do battle with Jesus Christ, because Jesus believed it was the Word of God. He said in Matthew 5,

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” (vv. 17–18)
