The constellation of Cancer was vitally important to Egyptians, Persians, Hindus, Chinese, Babylonians, and other ancient civilizations, even those of South America. All were convinced that the world would end when the planets move into line with each other in the constellation of the Crab.2 Romans maintained that the Crab was placed in the heavens by the Goddess Juno, thus would signal the end of the world by her decree.3 The creation of the present earth was also supposed to have coincided with another past alignment of the planets in Cancer.

Such association with both creation and destruction might explain why Cancer characteristics have been viewed as paradoxical. Cancer people are said to be practical, yet vividly imaginative; presumptuous, yet discreet; timid, yet bold; brilliant, yet dull; home-centered and undistinguished, yet at times evincing the greatest genius. Perhaps the only quality of Cancer that all astrologers can agree on is that of crablike tenacity.
