A New Hope

Sophie had let Hope talk her into taking the bed. She was too tired to put up a fight about anything. But she believed the girl really would feel trapped in the bedroom with a stranger in the apartment. Hope seemed fragile. The meds were holding her together, perhaps, but only like masking tape, and not enough of it.

She slept solidly. The toll of the intense ministry in Iowa was compounded by the long flight and some bad nights. In the dim of the morning, Sophie lay on the overly soft mattress listening for signs of life from the living room or kitchen. She could sense at least two angels in the apartment that were not in the bedroom. Only her female angel was visibly with her. Should she ask for her name? It didn’t seem right. Though Sophie was sure she wouldn’t have to be sacrificed if she found out. Not like with Rumpelstiltskin, however that fairytale went. She had probably heard a sanitized version as a kid.

Maybe Hope was a sound sleeper. The meds could do that. It was only six in the morning, but that was eight back home. Sophie slid out of bed and jarred her knees when she found the floor closer than she remembered. She hurried to the bathroom as quietly as she could, dealing with one of the consequences of sleeping straight through the night.

A glimpse of one foot was all she saw of Hope, motionless on what did look like a good quality air mattress. Not that Sophie had much experience with those.

Sitting in the bathroom, she recalled the moment last night when Hope described Sophie’s three angels. That was the first time she had met someone who saw them all so clearly. There had been a little girl at Detta’s church who describe three shiny lights, but that wasn’t the same. The comment about they pronouns was surely a joke, something Sophie had joked with herself about. She still hadn’t settled the angel gender question. Probably gender was like everything else she saw in the spirit world. Mostly symbolic.

She shook her head as she washed her hands. Hope had drifted off to sleep around midnight. Probably drug induced. Sophie wondered what she was taking. Last night Sophie’s head had been spinning, so she didn’t learn much about Hope’s situation. What was she expecting to learn? The girl definitely did see angels. That was really important to start with.

On tiptoes and with only small joint-cracking sounds, Sophie made it back to the bedroom. She was hungry, but she had a granola bar in her bag. More granola than bar by now.

She sat on the bed and opened her laptop, picking crumbs from the granola bar wrapper. There were a few emails she wanted to see on the computer instead of her phone. Priscilla had sent a picture from a baseball game she attended with that new guy, Curtis. Their smiles were both genuine. Was she in love? Sophie envied someone who had a clear answer to that question.
