Chapter Eleven

Malone

My beast raged within me as I meandered through the trees, putting off the inevitable.

The meeting was due to start in ten minutes, but I wasn’t ready. How could I be ready to face my pack after what I’d done?

Della had been the biggest mistake of my life. When she’d jumped in to protect her brother, she had caught me unaware. How had she startled an alpha?

Her bravery, that’s how.

I had never known a woman to be so protective over a sibling. And that was saying something considering how crazy were-women became when family was threatened.

“Malone,” Manual called, approaching with a frown. “What happened with Rochelle?”

Manual was one of my best friends. He had been my right-hand wolf since I’d become alpha three years ago. My father had placed me in charge, just before he’d passed from a heart attack. His wolf instincts had known that his body was shutting down, and he was ready to go. He had ruled the pack for almost a hundred years.

Werewolves healed from injury, but we weren’t immortal. We grew old and our bodies withered away, the same as a human. We just had a longer lifespan than the mortals who lived alongside us.

“She threatened the only person able to save Lionel from his agony,” I spat, the fury of earlier igniting in my chest as I thought of Rochelle.

Yes, we had shared a bed occasionally, but I had never made any promises to Rochelle. She knew we weren’t mates, the bond had never evoked between us. She had no right to go after Della because of her jealousy.

“It doesn’t look good for you, man.” Manual ran a hand through his fluffy dirty blonde hair. “Everyone is going crazy trying to work out what’s going on with you.”

Kicking the dirt with my leather boot, I shook my head. “I know the feeling,” I muttered under my breath.

Ever since Della Mason had come into my life, my beast had been howling inside my mind, only quiet when I shifted and ran over the hills. He wanted her with every fibre of his soul. And he pounded my insides every second of every day, until I was in her company. Then he purred like a fucking pussy cat.

“You rode your bike over? Was that wise?” Manual gestured to the shiny red Suzuki, his eyebrows raising when I shrugged.

He clearly thought I couldn’t handle the vehicle in my current state of mind. I happened to disagree. Riding cleared my head as much as running did. Plus, the pulse of the engine between my thighs made me feel alive and ready to defend my actions to the pack.

“Dude,” Manual said, clasping my shoulder as he scratched his balls, “Just be honest.”

Stepping out of his reach, I shook my head at him. He wore ripped jeans and a checked shirt. His screw yourself attitude was a hit with the ladies, who he used and left. He didn’t give a crap what anyone thought of him. Ever.

I sometimes begrudged his freedom, wishing that my father had chosen my sister for the role of alpha.
