Chapter 6 - Aaron

Four people sat at the boardroom table at the Savannah Enterprises headquarters, including Aaron. Directly across from him was his boss, Leo the lion shifter, his golden beard especially well-kept today. Leo wasn't just Aaron's boss, but also his clan leader.

He was the Alpha for a lot of people, actually, and their clan was growing every day. Leo had been working most of his life to try and erase the boundaries between people like shifters, elves, fae, and other magical creatures and join them all into one big clan, at least locally. They'd faced some challenges so far, and while everything was slowly starting to come together for their clan, they were on the verge of rising over another hump in Leo's dream—or perhaps making it larger, if things went horribly wrong.

"Planting officially begins next week," Leo said, his deep voice booming through the room. "Give me a status update. How is everything progressing?"

No one else probably noticed it, but there was a hint of anxiety in Leo's voice. Since Aaron and Leo had been friends for a long time, Aaron noticed those slight details.

"All of the saplings arrived on site a couple of days ago as planned," Rio said. He was a wizard and instead of hair, he had several swirling tattoos on his scalp. "Now they're secured in an on-site storage facility with a 24/7 armed guard, just in case."

In the past, their clan had experienced sabotage by outside forces who didn't want to unify their communities and would rather remain segregated and fighting one another. While they'd overcome those challenges so far, Leo had seen fit to organize increased security until a time came where he convinced everyone that they were better working together.

This orchard planting project was a huge keystone in Leo's plans to unify Marhan, as the orchard land was to be infused with magical energies so the trees and crops within would grow quicker and provide sustenance for creatures and races such as the elves who required a diet filled with magical nutrients to survive in the human world.

Up until yesterday, Aaron had dutifully helped Leo work toward this goal of his, but besides the fact that success would be good for everyone in his clan and community, Aaron hadn't much personal investment in the project. Now, with Luna a part of his life, ensuring that the orchard was completed smoothly and on time had a lot more importance to him. The elves in the area were already struggling, and Luna might, too, if something went wrong.

And he never wanted to see her suffer.

Yet, the look in her eyes last night flashed before his eyes. He married her, took her virginity, and then got afraid and withdrew into himself. What kind of asshole was he? She probably didn't know what to think about him anymore, especially after they'd hit it off so well. To make matters worse, he left her that morning without a word, just a note on the kitchen table.
