***

Morning came faster than I had hoped. Having Leah in my arms all night had put me in an excellent mood, however ravenous I had become in the few hours we had taken to sleep. By the time we got on the road to walk to my mother’s house, our feet were in sync and our fingers were tightly wound together.

People milled on their porches with coffee. Each one waved at us with a knowing grin. Our bites were pretty obvious. Everyone knew what had happened last night.

If not for the marks, then for how loud we were fucking.

My bed nearly went through the ground after the third round. Leah had been almost insatiable, taking me in every position we could have possibly done. We even came up with a few on our own. That room and that mattress would never be the same now that we had marked it up with our passion.

The early morning sun illuminated my mother’s porch. Mom was already in one of the rocking chairs with a steaming cup of tea next to her and enough books to start her own library. It might even rival the one that Blake had in his mansion.

“Morning,” I greeted while hopping up the steps. I kissed my mother’s cheek. “How was she? Okay? Bad? Good?”

Mom squinted at me and then smiled at Leah. “Good.”

“That’s a relief.” I scooped Inez into my arms. “We always want you to be good!”

Mom coughed and then pointed to her neck. “I mean, good. You finally got it done.”

Leah coughed nervously while I sighed. “Mom, don’t be weird.”

“It’s not weird to know what happened. We’ve all done it.”

“That is not the image I wanted in my head first thing in the morning.”

She waved nonchalantly. “That’s fine. You can always put another image in your head when the pup goes down for her nap.”

This time, Leah was the one to laugh.

And while it irked me that my mother was being weird, it made me happy to hear Leah giggle. That was a sound I always wanted near me. That was something that needed to fill up my home.

I cleared my throat. “Well, we’ll get out of your hair and—”

“No, stay for breakfast.” She stood up and took Leah’s hand. “He’s so grumpy when he hasn’t had food, right?”

Leah snorted. “No kidding.”

Mom leaned close to Leah and whispered something. Well, that was suspicious. They had never gotten along once in their lives.

But instead of being totally annoyed, I actually felt warm all over. Like I was a candle finally being lit and allowed to burn properly.

And maybe that was how my family was supposed to feel. Perhaps it was something I could discover for myself if I just let it warm me up instead of melting me.

There was one way I could find out.
