CHAPTER FOURTEEN
CALLUM
The slightest brush of fingertips stirred me awake, causing my muscles to tense and an involuntary shiver to wrack my spine. I woke with a start, eyes flying open with the unexpected touch as I scanned my surroundings.
Sometime during the night, I had shifted for the first time in over a week as a means of keeping the cold out of my bones. My fur kept me warm through the harshest of Ebonroweâs wintery air, but there was another ball of warmth curled into my side, one that wasnât a part of me.
Savannah, my human side whispered with realization, and my wolf half had to agree. The little bundle of warmth tucked comfortably against my side was Savannah Collins, the only human who I allowed to get close to me. She was already awake, eyes locked on her fingertips as they played with my fur, drawing random shapes along my skin. My wolf let out a howl, overjoyed at the prospect that our fated mate was this close to us, touching us with such careful caresses, but I reigned him in, trying to keep him in check. Because the last thing I wanted was to scare her off with too much affection.
Savannah didnât seem to mind, however, as she continuously ran her fingers through my fur, a half-smile on her face. Good morning, Sunshine, I spoke, directing my thoughts to her.
I had absolutely no idea if I would be able to communicate with her in this way. After all, she wasnât a wolf shifter, so I had no idea if her human brain could even handle telepathic communication. But when she jolted, eyes locking onto mine, I could tell she had heard me plain as day.
And she was startled by it. My own mate was startled that I could communicate with her through our minds while in this form.
âWhat just happened?â she questioned, her fingers stilling, as she stared at me in confusion. âDid youâ¦did you justâ¦?â
I gave her a single nod, enough to ensure her she wasnât just hearing things. While in this form, I can use my mind to communicate.
âHow is this possible?â she wondered. âIâm not like you.â
A part of me thought it had something to do with the bond, but another part of me disregarded that idea. After all, we hadnât solidified it, so the bond was nowhere near as strong as it could be. I donât know, I admitted. To be honest, I wasnât sure if this would work.
âWell, it does.â Savannah scrunched her face. And then, her face brightened as if an idea came to her. âYou said humans used to know about you, right?â
Yes, I said.
âYou probably couldâve communicated with humans in this manner all along!â she chirped, a smirk curving her lips until a frown enveloped it. âUnless that was one more thing your goddesses took from my people.â
Itâs possible, I admitted. It was the only other thing that made sense. Even if Alonsia and the others had taken that ability away from the humans, if Savannah were in fact a testâ¦
I shook my head.
