Chapter 8

"Not just Frazier. A fae, too?" Nathan strove to keep his tone low.

The sun had barely promised daylight on the horizon. He'd been unable to sleep. Since putting Carrie to bed around midnight, he'd been going through all the leads on the coyote's reappearance. Something kept telling him more to this lay hidden in the mud of information. When Chip and Uno rolled in with the news, it seemed too good to be true.

"No. It was Tinkerbell's baby-fresh scent," Chip rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "This nose doesn't lie, not when blood's been spilled." While the best tracker he'd ever seen, maybe that ever lived, her arrogance and anger often rubbed people the wrong way. Especially within the wolf community.

"I'm sorry for her dog, but if the pup hadn't defended the animals and chased after the attackers, we wouldn't have known."

Whoa. Easily the nicest comment she'd made in the year she'd worked for him. And with the barest sliver of approval, too.

"It took me a while,” Chip continued. “But a single drop mingled with Carrie's dead animals. Garrett's scent was so strong in the barn, I almost missed it. Damn coyote must've saved up his piss for days to spread that much around." Her lip curled in distaste. "The elf's scent traveled with Frazier across the property to where they breeched the spell."

"No fae could've managed that." The fingers on Uno's right hand tapped the handle of the blade strapped at his thigh. "That means he's working with at least two others and someone who could breach Carrie’s cousin’s spell. My vote is for Clan Magic."

Chip's brow crunched together. "I almost discounted what my nose was telling me. I thought he inspired other immortals, but did his work solo."

Nathan began to weigh variables. "It's a departure from prior M-O. I'd been kickin’ around the idea it's not really Frazier, but if your nose says it is, it's enough for me."

She shifted and something alien flitted across her face—doubt.

"What?"

"Well, I first thought I imagined it." She started to pace, her frown deepening. "Maybe something in his cologne or the fabric softener he used, or maybe even something he ate coming out of his pores, like feta or garlic, but I'm getting something different than the clothing you gave me." She pivoted and stopped at the far end of the living area. "It's the same. But not."

The idea they weren't dealing with Garrett Frazier, once the seed of a hunch, took root. "Keep on it."

Carrie appeared from the bedroom dressed in jeans and another plaid snap-shirt. "Morning," she mumbled as she made her way to the coffee pot. "What's she talking about?"

He entertained not telling her, but trying to do what he thought best for her caused him to leave his mate three years ago and lose her love. She'd never forgive him if he did it again. "We're working on the idea it may not be Frazier."

The stream of coffee stopped. Carrie carefully replaced the pot in the machine, then screwed the lid on her travel cup.
