Chapter Eight

She expected to share a bedroom with Torian. She expected to lie naked with him throughout the night. But after dinner, he disappeared and Fabian escorted her back up the stairs and to a room at the end of the hall that she'd never been in before.

"Here you go.” Fabian swung open the door.

"Thanks.” She brushed past him and entered the large bedroom. A heavy four-poster bed sat in the middle of the space. It was covered with white pillows and what looked like white satin sheets. She saw a cherry wood dresser to the right, and there was an old bookcase in the corner.

And there was no sign of Torian.

Fabian motioned toward a white door and then waved toward a hanging curtain. “That's your bathroom, and over there is your closet. There are plenty of clothes inside for you."

"Who got the clothes for me?” She asked, curious.

"Torian did."

Oh. A warm glow spread through her. “And where is our dear Torian right now?"

Fabian raised a brow. “Missing your mate already?"

Sara flushed. “Look, he said we were supposed to meet, okay?” Not that it was any of Fabian's business, anyway. And she certainly wasn't going to tell the blond lug that she and Torian had personal business to attend to. There is much I will show you. Much I will do to you. A shiver ran down her spine.

"He had to leave.” Fabian turned on his heel and headed for the door.

"What?” She blinked. He'd left? But he was supposed to come to her, supposed to—

"A missive arrived.” Fabian pulled open the door.

A missive? Was that like a note? “And what, he just took off?"

"Yes.” Fabian walked out of the room.

She ran after him. “He left?” she repeated, her voice rising an octave. “He just left?"

He glanced back at her, his face grave. “He had business to attend to."

Right, business. Important business, no doubt. Probably some stupid wizard issue. So much for their plans. Apparently, she didn't even rate a good-bye.

"He stood me up,” she muttered, pinching the bridge of her nose. “The jerk stood me up."

Fabian frowned. “He had to go."

"When did he get this missive?"

"The messenger arrived right after dinner."

Her gaze narrowed. “Do you know what the message was about?"

A cautious nod.

Curiosity began to burn within her. What was so important that Torian had run out into the night? “Are the wizards rebelling or something? What's going on?"

He hesitated, looking ill at ease.

"Come on,” she urged. “You can tell me.” What had happened?

"Torian will return soon."

Well, that was great to know, but it didn't answer her question. Where had he gone? And why? “Is it ... another woman?” The words were hushed, and the moment they left her mouth, she wished that she could call them back. She hadn't meant to say that, truly she hadn't. The words had just ... tumbled out.

"No.” Fabian's voice was nearly as soft as hers had been. “You are his mate. For him, there is no other."

Doubt nagged at her. “But I'm not his mate, not yet.
