Chapter Thirteen

I watch the witch as Riley’s eyes go wide.

“What is a hybrid?”

“Remember the war that we heard so much about?” Leo sighs. “The one we were told was the reason we had to stay away from the vampires?”

“Yes, of course. How could I forget that?”

“Yeah, well, I’m the reason why. And other people like me.”

Riley’s brow furrows. “What do you mean?”

“I mean that I was born from a hybrid witch and vampire.”

Riley gasps. “What? In recent years? I mean, you’re only thirty-four, right?”

“Right. What we didn’t know is that all this time, it was still happening behind the scenes. Witches and vampires were still falling in love and finding a way to be together. Sometimes they had offspring. I’m one of those situations.”

“Oh my gods,” Riley whispers. “It makes so much sense now.”

“What does?” Presley asks.

“When I was younger, when I first came to the coven, I immediately knew something was different about Leo. I didn’t know what. My gifts were still growing. I went to Sylvia to ask, and she said you were the same as us, and if I heard anything different, the spirits were playing with me and trying to confuse me. She told me to put it out of my mind. And I did. But there were so many times over the years that I was reminded there was just something different, but I didn't know what. I asked my spirit guides, and they refused to say anything about you.” He smiles. “Except that you would never do me any harm. So I just accepted it, but in my heart, I always knew you were special.”

“I wish I’d known. I didn’t until just before Sylvia died.”

Riley nods, gripping Leo’s hand. “So then what happened?”

Leo shivers as Augustus rubs his back for comfort. Presley sits on my lap, listening to the conversation.

“I asked Augustus to turn me. It was the only way to embrace my powers and who I really am inside.”

“So you’re a vampire.”

“I’m a hybrid, Riley. I am both.”

“But you’re not,” he says to Presley.

“Nope. Just your run-of-the-mill vampire. No more witch powers anymore.”

“Okay.” Riley nods, taking in the information. “Is that why the demons want you?”

Leo nods. “They want all the hybrids.”

“How many are there?”

“Three that we know of, according to Sylvia. We don’t know who the other two are.”

“Just three in the whole world?” Riley questions.

“That’s my understanding. We need to find out who the other two are because they are not safe. Not while the demons are out there trying to get the blood for the grimoire.”

“Why our grimoire?” Riley asks.

“I don’t know that either. I don’t know the answers to a lot of things.” Leo nods. “But I know what I am. And I know what my mission is.”

“Why didn’t you tell us? Don’t you trust us?”

“It’s not that, Riley. I haven’t told you guys because I don’t know what to say yet. Sure, I know what I am, but I don’t know what it means. I don’t know what impact it’ll have on the world yet.
