Chapter 11

Chuck sat back in his desk and looked over the files from the Macon kidnapping. It looked like a messier version of the two kidnappings here in town. He wanted to talk to the parents of the missing children again with the extra information he gained from these files. The scene in Macon had a clear point of entry, unlike the others. It also had the same dust found at the fourth scene, which he couldn’t include in his report yet.

The entire prospect worried him. How many cases had he worked that involved magic? How many supernatural people or creatures or something had he put in jail? How was he supposed to refer to that group? Supernatural? Magical? Right now, that didn’t matter.

He needed to concentrate. With absolutely no suspects, his focus deteriorated. He could start with the ingredients. He needed a list of all the shops in the drivable area that sold these herbs. All herbs. He knew at least two could be found at flower shops, grocery stores, and grown in people’s yards. For all he knew, all of these could grow in anyone’s yard.

He opened his pad and started listing shops he knew that sold special herbs. He had one shop on the list. He frowned at his pad. He would get a uniform cop to make some calls. He should re-interview the families and look over the scenes again with fresh eyes. Maybe he could get Jesi to go with him. His cell phone rang. He smiled as he looked at the name.

Jesi.

“Detective Massey.” He didn’t want the others around him to know who called.

“Hey, Chuck. It’s Jesi.”

“Hi. I’m glad you called.” He felt a stupid grin flash on his face. Whenever he thought about her, he smiled. He’d never reacted that way towards another person. Maybe he didn’t care what the others thought.

“Yeah?” Jesi asked.

“Yeah,” Chuck said.

“I’m glad I called too,” she said. He could hear her smile on the other end.

“What are you doing after lunch?” Chuck asked.

“Why, Detective, are you asking me to leave my post?” Jesi teased.

“Maybe.” His voice softened.

“I’ll talk to Maggie and get back to you,” Jesi said.

“Excellent.”

“I actually have something to tell you. About the case,” Jesi said. She brought him back to the real world.

“Oh? Go ahead.”

“After going through our purchase records,” she said, “we have three people who bought the rare ingredients in the last month. Well, the last 6 months, really.”

“That’s great,” he said. “Can you give me their names?”

“Yes. I have Sandy Smalls, Andres Marin, and Roger Hall.”

“Roger Hall?” Chuck couldn’t hide the surprise from his voice.

“Do you know him?”

“Is he tall, with dark hair?” Chuck asked. “Has a permanent smirk on his face and rolls his eyes like it’s what keeps him breathing?”

“Yes,” Jesi said. “That sounds like him.”

“Yeah, he dates Hayley.”

“How do you know Hayley?” Jesi asked.

“She’s my sister.” He let out a loud sigh.

“Hayley’s your sister?” Jesi’s voice caused Chuck to pull the phone away from his ear.

“Yeah, she’s my sister,” Chuck said.
