They stared at each other, not saying a word, though a thousand promises were being made with his eyes. The warmth she saw there surprised her, there was something so undeniably tender about the way he looked at her. For such a fearsome creature, Fen had a good soul, she knew that without a doubt. He was nothing like Lucian and she hated the fact that she couldn't stop comparing them.

Anna looked to her feet and sighed while Fen waited. “How am I supposed to know if I’m ready for something like that?”

He stepped closer. She could smell him all around her. Her senses were maturing, and she could pick out the scent of eucalyptus and just a hint of smoke. He smelled wild, like the kingdom beyond the walls of the castle. His smell was comforting, and so was the hand he brought up to caress the side of her cheek. “I never want you to feel pressured into anything, Anna; you don't have to be with me if that's not something you want.” His voice was strained, but she still knew he meant every word. “If it's not something you feel, I’d never ask you to force yourself to love me…”

“I think it’s a little early to talk about love, don’t you?” She chuckled awkwardly. Still, she didn’t step away.

His eyes glittered. “For you, maybe, but not for me.” She sucked in a swift breath. “I’ve watched over you for eighteen long years. I’ve had more than enough time to figure out what I want… what I need.” He gripped her fingers tighter. “When you’re ready… if you’re ever ready for me, I’ll be waiting. But since it’s too early, and you don’t really know me yet, why don’t we settle for being…” He cringed. “Friends?”

She laughed as she let out a long breath. Her muscles loosened. “Friends…” She tasted the word on her tongue. It was bitter.

As if he could read her thoughts, Fen’s fingers drifted down the side of her face, tracing the edge of her jaw. He brought his thumb to her lower lip and ran the pad of it over the softness. She shivered under his touch, wanting more and yet somehow fearing it. She meant what she said before. She didn’t know if she was ready, but her body was screaming at her to pull him closer.

“That's not helping,” she warned with a smirk.

Fen pulled his hand back and she missed his touch immediately. She cursed herself for being so wary. “Sorry… I’ve just been waiting so long for you to come here, and it’s a little surreal.” His eyes searched her face with a barely contained look of awe. She blushed, and a tingle ran down her spine. “I want to kiss you so badly…” His eyes fell to her lips and she licked them absently. His pupils expanded.

“I said I wasn’t ready to love you… but I never said I didn’t want to kiss you too,” she whispered, and she’d just barely finished her sentence before he was covering her lips with his.
