Chapter Nineteen

Willow’s heart banged against her ribs. We’re not in Connecticut anymore.

“A few of these primitive beasts came through the portal by mistake with our ancestors centuries ago. They’re magical beings,” Nev said. “They can make themselves invisible.”

Willow shook her head. She had no words.

“There are unicorns here, too, although I’ve never seen one in any of my visits.”

“Rare they are, but they be about. So what happened to the Bilbane?” Eldrin tapped his fingers on the table. “Did the plant not make the trip through the portal?”

“Yes, but its healing properties faded too quickly. The remedy didn’t work. I thought about taking seeds back or whole plants and replanting them in my garden. The book says Bilbane only grows in soil with phesemane. Do you know what phesemane is?”

“Yes. A rare mineral of some sort. The plot of Bilbane near my oat field must contain it, then. I noticed the crop on that side of the field grows higher.”

“Makes the job hard to—”

“Well, hello, Otherworld folk.” A tall, slender woman, a Faen by the ears, glided through the doorway from another room. She had upswept ash-blonde hair with tiny braids threaded through and gathered at her nape. Long tendrils hung loose on either side of high, pronounced cheekbones. Her back was ramrod straight. What a striking-looking woman. And younger than Eldrin by a few years.

“I’m Freya, Eldrin’s drudgery woman.” She smiled as she stuck out her hand. Her warm, brown eyes crinkled at the corners.

Willow stood and shook her hand. “Willow. I’m Nev’s client.”

“Uh-huh. And what’s this?” She turned Willow’s gloved hand over and back. “Surely you’re not cold. Not in here.”

“Freya. You’re too bold,” Eldrin said.

“Pfft. How do you learn anything?”

“That’s okay.” Willow removed the gloves. Her blues sparkled in the flickering light. Both Faen took a breath. “These are part of the reason Nev is searching for a cure for me.”

“Eldrin told me of the Bilbane last night. May I?” Freya advanced a finger.

“Okay. You’re not mage, so you won’t feel the tingle, which is harmless anyway.”

Freya touched the back of her hand. “Why are they blue? What’s the purpose?”

“I wish I knew. When my powers came in, lame as they are, I found I was a healer to witches and other magical creatures, like our familiars. But soon my hands started turning color. I had to hide them from the Regs. Regular humans.”

Freya nodded. “And your healing power?”

“Not affected. At least, not yet.” Willow sat.

“Willow belongs to the Elite witches. Her family is not content with such a rare gift as healing.” Nev met her eyes. “We’ve been working on her higher magic.”

“And I’ve improved a lot in two weeks.”

“Yes, you have.”

Silence hung in the air for a moment. Nev’s eyes softened around the edges. A half-smile tilted his mouth. He had an I’m-fond-of-this-pain-in-the-ass look on his face.

“Good.” Eldrin cleared his throat. “Good. So the Bilbane will restore a normal hue to her hands and help her attain Elite magic? Is that what you’re hoping for?”

“If I’ve interpreted the text in this book.
