Over the next few days, Bailey found herself visiting the shop often, even though Erik had not formally invited her once. She did her best to avoid Sam who, despite being polite, left her feeling as though she had done something wrong every time she saw him.

“What’s the deal with Sam?” she asked falteringly on Friday afternoon, four days after their first official date.

“What do you mean?” Erik asked as he sanded. He didn’t look up, but Bailey knew he was listening. They had developed a rapport between them that often passed with hours of Bailey being by his side. The connection between them had only grown over the past days and she relished the sensation of being so close to someone after so long.

Even if she hadn’t told him the truth about herself.

She wasn’t sure if she would either. The thought of coming completely clean with anyone was still foreign to her and it was still too early to know… Wasn’t it?

“I mean that he doesn’t seem to like me very much,” Bailey explained. “Every time I see him, he gives me a weird look.”

Erik finally raised his head and eyed her.

“Don’t mind him. He’s just protective of me,” Erik sighed. “He has nothing against you, I’m sure.”

Bailey returned his stare, sensing a note of uncertainty in his voice.

“I don’t know if that’s true,” she replied but she knew there was no sense in arguing with him. She didn’t intend to put Erik in the position of choosing sides. She wasn’t even sure there were sides to choose, only a feeling that Sam was not her biggest fan.

I have nothing but feelings, don’t I? she mused, watching Erik get back to work. Her eyes trailed back toward the etchings she’d found when they had made love on the boat. On Tuesday, she had rushed home to dig up the long-forgotten locket she had once put away to stare intently at the markings. Indeed, they had matched what she had seen on Erik’s boat and while she didn’t understand it, she knew that it had to mean something. After all, her magic only worked around Erik and the pull she felt toward him was not lost on her. All of it had to lead somewhere.

Maybe Erik knew magic too!

Yet as excited as the idea got her, Bailey saw no signs that Erik Ulven was anything more than what he had told her.

But would he know I was an immortal witch if he was looking for a sign himself?

It was a mental debate she had had with herself several times, one that had no answer, at least not yet. Bailey decided to wait it out before she said anything, lest she scare Erik off forever.

“Honestly, Sam is just surprised to see me dating,” Erik went on. “If he seems standoffish, it’s just because he’s processing.”

“Maybe I shouldn’t come around as much,” Bailey said slowly. “I mean, until he processes or whatever.”

Erik’s head jerked up and his blue eyes narrowed.

“That’s your decision,” he said slowly.
