Chapter 6

“You’re late,” Tobias said, as Xavier bounded through the door, his arms bulging with bags full of presents. “But just in time for dinner. Why am I not surprised?”

“At least I’m here,” Xavier replied. His brother looked as pale as a ghost. “But I feel like shit. Goddamn hangover.” Tobias closed the door, shaking his head. Typical. This was just like his brother. He listened to the exchanges as Xavier greeted everyone inside.

“We’ve barely seen you, darling.” Millicent’s voice rang of disapproval.

“I’m here now.” He placed the bags near the Christmas tree.

“Good to see you, son,” Ellery said, hugging his son. “What’s keeping you so busy these days?”

What indeed? Tobias wondered.

“You haven’t visited since the wedding, darling,” Millicent complained. Tobias could see she had a heap of questions she was fighting to keep at bay.

“I’ve been busy, Mom. You know how it is.”

“I don’t know how it is,” his mother replied just as Savannah entered the room. “Whoa.” Xavier eyed Savannah with a mixture of surprise and shock and then blinked a couple of times. “I forgot you were—”

“You wouldn’t forget if we saw you more often,” Savannah grinned, kissing him on both cheeks. “So glad you could make it.”

“Hell, I wasn’t going to miss this first Christmas with you newlyweds,” Xavier replied, looking at them both with admiration. “I’m going to be an uncle. It’s the best news we’ve had all year. Congrats, dude.” He slapped Tobias on the back. “I’m going to spoil your kid,” he said, “Just like I’m going to spoil Jacob. Hey, sport.” Xavier winked at Jacob who’d been playing quietly in the corner. “Come over here.”

Jacob walked over with his head lowered and clutching a toy in his hand. It was the one Tobias had bought him last Christmas. One year on, and despite all the presents and toys that the boy now had, he still preferred to play with his Ironman figurine.

Jacob stood a little awkwardly, as if he was a little unsure of himself. He’d been used to having Savannah to himself and Tobias wondered if Jacob now found it strange to not only have to share his mom with him, but to have a whole new group of people in his life as well. He had been careful, and patient and understanding around the boy and he wanted to do his best by Jacob. He was aware that the child had too many years of bad memories to erase, and many good memories to create.

“This bag is for you, Jacob,” said Xavier, pointing to a silver colored bag that was filled to the brim with gifts. “More presents?”” exclaimed Jacob. “Thank you.”

“Why don’t we open some of these today?” asked Millicent, “At least the ones that the Stones have brought.”

“We’ve always opened our presents on Christmas morning,” Savannah replied.

“But we’ve always opened ours on Christmas Eve.” Millicent wasn’t giving up easily.

“Well, this year, we’re doing it the way Savannah wants, Mom.” Tobias replied, gritting his teeth together. Even though he had a glass of champagne in his hands, he felt far from relaxed.
