Chapter Fourteen – Clell

Clell held on tightly to Elara’s hand as they neared the docks. She didn’t seem to mind.

A few small sailboats danced around one another in the shallows, while some larger ships took straight lines in and out of the bay. Dockworkers were loading and unloading boats, but the harbor wasn’t busy as they walked through it.

She’s not going to stowaway on one of the ships and disappear out of our lives, his wolf told him.

That’s not what I’m concerned about, Clell replied as they stepped down onto the quayside.

You’re afraid one of these swarthy sailors is going to sweep her off her feet and carry her away to some exotic land? his wolf teased.

Nope. Clell scanned the ships bobbing on the ocean.

You’re afraid she’s going to push you into the drink because secretly she still believes that we are The Widowmaker? His wolf paused for breath.

No, Clell said in exasperation.

Then what? His wolf was out of guesses.

I’m afraid one of these swarthy sailors will upset her and she’ll unleash a tidal wave on them.

He could feel the buildup of magic tingling against the palm of his hand. And since he’d witnessed how fast Elara reacted if threatened, he was concerned. Since they had visited Sacred Scents, she often had a hand in her pocket, likely holding the calming rune stone she had been given.

“Okay, The Wind Raider must be here somewhere,” Clell said to Elara.

“If you say so,” Elara replied, a little abrasively.

Oh! His wolf chuckled. I think you are the one who might end up in the drink.

“What do you mean, if I say so?” Clell stopped walking and turned to face Elara.

“Why are we going to Malakin?” Elara asked.

“There’s something I need to do,” he replied. “It won’t take long.”

“I thought we agreed we were a team. Equals.” She slipped her hand out of his and folded her arms across her body.

“We did,” Clell replied. “We are.”

“But you have decided to get on a boat and travel to some island when the person we are looking for is here in Wishing Moon Bay,” Elara accused.

“Do we know he’s here in Wishing Moon Bay?” Clell asked.

Elara screwed up her mouth and averted her gaze to stare out at the ocean. “He’s got to be. Besides, the man with the scar is definitely here in town. We know that because he goes into Merri and Keely’s shop every week.”

“You’re right, but we only know he’ll be there on Thursday. Beyond that, he could be anywhere.” Clell looked back to the large town to try to prove his point. “If even Clancy and his wolves didn’t find these guys, we’re just going to be chasing our tails. I figured we could go to Malakin and back while we wait…for Thursday.”

“Why?” Elara asked. “What’s so important to you on this island?”

“Because...” Clell pointed at a ship. “There. The Wind Raider.” He held out his hand to her. “Coming?”

Elara didn’t move.

“I’ll explain everything once we are on board,” he promised.
