Preparing Your Soul for Sex
Praying together, talking about what God is teaching you, embracing the beauty of God’s creation, and worshipping together comprise what we call “spiritual intercourse.”[2] It happens when a couple connects intimately on a spiritual level. According to Nick Stinnett’s worldwide research, one of the elements consistently found in healthy, loving families is shared, meaningful religious experiences.[3] If your husband is willing, ask him to spend some time discussing how you can best connect spiritually. Even if your husband doesn’t share your faith in God, you can still embrace God’s perspective on sex personally.
God has much to say about sex in His Word—much more, in fact, than just instructing us to “be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28, NASB). He wants us to enjoy sex. As author Ed Wheat points out, “God Himself invented sex for our delight. It was His gift to us—intended for pleasure.”[4]
Think of God as the amazingly creative designer of sex! He planned sex as a unique and integral part of marriage—a celebration, not a burden. He could have just come up with a simple technical process for reproduction, but instead He conceived of sex—an amazingly intimate act intended not only for procreation but for great pleasure and a one-of-a-kind unity. Sex is an experience that deepens our marital bond and strengthens our connection with our husbands. It’s also an area in which we can add creative flourish and flair to reflect our unique selves.
To prepare yourself spiritually for sex, meditate on the fact that God is the creator of this delightfully intimate physical aspect of marriage. Understanding God’s design for sex and adopting His perspective are essential for connecting sexually with our husbands and embracing sex more passionately.
