I want to die,” she said and I was alerted by the sudden decision this lady had made rather than to ask my advice on how to live. I studied her face closely as she stared at me and I realized very quickly that she was truly a very beautiful creature and I was even more concerned and worried about her urgency as she seemed to be very serious indeed in her desire to take her own life and I was even more concerned in my effort to help her. I had seen many potential suicides before, but they never looked as lovely or as young . or as very much alive as this one and my curiosity made me move my chair closer to where she was sitting
“Do you have a family . a husband? “I asked but she shook her head slowly and looked down at the floor. “Both parents dead and now my younger brother has committed suicide, but I have a young son. He is about fourteen, I think” she said and her extra consideration made me wonder what was going on in her mind.
“You THINK, your son is fourteen madam, but surely you must know his birthday. You surely could never forget the day . the moment he was born?” I asked and again she shook her head.
“My son . well the young lad that I call my son is not my son really. He is . what you might say . adopted, I suppose,”
I scratched my head in even more confusion and I asked this lady to have a cup of tea and settle down before she would tell me anymore. With that, I rang the bell on my desk and my secretary brought in the tea at my request.
“Tell me please . Miss NcVeigh, why do you say that your son may be adopted? Surely you would know if he was or not?”
Janet McVeigh almost scoffed at me when I asked her that question, but before she gave me her answer, she asked me one of her own.
“Are you married?” she asked and I replied that I was not. “Divorced?” she asked again, looking into my face as if she was sure to get a positive reply.
“No . my wife of twelve years died of cancer two years ago, but I have a little daughter of fifteen,” I replied and in that moment I wondered why on earth I should have told this woman the secrets of my life. I was here as a psychiatrist to help her . and not she helping me, but she settled down after a few moments and slowly drank her tea. I thought SHE might make a good psychiatrist, but of course I would never have suggested that to her.
“I have had a very troubled life,” she said, “My parents were useless, fat and ugly and hateful to say the least. I have dreads and fears of marriage because of the way they treated us . my brother and myself .
