Grace and Tom looked at each other. They had to find a way to help Riley and stop the machine from causing any more problems around Moreland.

But they’d discovered the technology was too tricky even for the person who had made the machine. So how would they be able to help?

“Sometimes, when problems seem too big, you have to take it one step at a time,” said Watson.

Nodding, Grace said, “Stage one is to get the machine out of the well.” She thought for a moment, then a grin spread across her face as an idea came to her. “That web-blaster I’ve been working on was meant for catching criminals, but perhaps it can catch other things too.”

“We could attach a rope to the web,” said Tom. His eyes lit up as he worked out Grace’s plan.

“Then we’ll shoot it into the well,” said Grace. “The web is hi-tech and so sticky it will latch on to anything. Then we can pull the machine up.”

“I can vouch for the stickiness of the web,” said Watson with a raised eyebrow.

“Er, what’s a web-blaster?” asked Riley.

“Our latest invention,” Grace said. “A super-sticky web shoots from the gun and latches on to the first thing it hits.” Grace took the web-blaster from her rucksack, and they began feeding a rope into the body of the invention and carefully tying it to the sticky web.

“I’ll need to lean right into the well to get a good aim,” said Grace. “Watson, you perch on the sides and hold the torch in your beak so I can see.”

Tom and Riley held on to Grace’s legs while she leaned into the well.

“Watson, on second thoughts, can you get a stun stick from my pocket, light it and throw it down, please?”

Watson pecked one from Grace’s pocket, then threw it into the well.

“That’s better,” Grace said. “I can see more clearly now. Wow, that’s some machine you’ve created, Riley!”

The well began vibrating.

“Quick!” Tom urged. “It sounds like it’s about to fire something out again!”

The machine whirred, and bright white light fizzled inside. Grace took aim with the web-blaster. “I’m setting it to full strength!”

Taking aim, she released the trigger. The force almost made Grace drop the web-blaster and fall downwards, but she clung on, and Tom and Riley firmly held on to her legs.

The weather machine was about to blast something, but the web propelled towards it, enclosing it with a satisfying shlap!

“Yes! We have contact,” said Grace. “And the web seems to be containing whatever weather the machine was about to throw out. Let’s pull it up.”

The machine choked and spluttered, but no blasts of snow or ice came out.
